Still Field is structured through three horizontal zones: a wildflower meadow, a dark tree line and an expansive blue sky. The low viewpoint gives the sky unusual scale, while uneven treetops and broken cloud forms interrupt the otherwise stable composition. White and yellow flowers punctuate the foreground, echoing the light of the clouds and drawing the lower and upper parts of the image together.
Depth is carried primarily through colour. Olive, ochre and deep green build the field, the woodland forms the darkest tonal passage, and saturated blue opens the space above. In the original painting, layered strokes give density to the meadow, shorter dark marks articulate the trees, and broader pale strokes shape the clouds, moving the eye between compressed detail below and open space above.
